EL Nahual (#14)
5 de Mayo 402, Centro
In a city that abounds with artesanía shops of indifferent quality, El Nahual stands out for its focus on select Oaxacan artisans and superior quality crafts. Especially noteworthy are the fine wool tapetes  by eminent Teotitlán weaver Tito Mendoza, superb jewelry by master silversmith Brigitte Huet, outstanding cotton bags by prize-winning weaver Abigail Mendoza of Santo Tomás Jalieza, and eye-catching alebrijes by celebrated master carvers. Also featured are graphics by major local and national artists. Owner Alejandrina ("Ale") Rios has worked in the artesanía field for years and is well-versed in Mexican arts and crafts.

Que Tenga Buena Mano  (#12)
Constitución 108, Centro
Artesanía shops are a dime a dozen in Oaxaca, most just clones of each other. However this hole-in-a-wall, no-décor place with an odd name (it means "Having a Knack for...") is clearly different and offers an interesting and eclectic mix of folk art items, old and new textiles, traditional toys and reproduction silver jewelry. There is a lot crammed into a very small space here, so look carefully. The owner, Francisco Jesus Hernandez, has long worked in the artesanía field and is knowledgeable and helpful. (He can also repair jewelry.) This is a shop well worth seeking out for traditional popular art.
