La Mano Mágica  (#23)
Macedonio Alcalá 203, Centro
Owned by Mary Jane Gagnier, La Mano Mágica has long been Oaxaca's premier artesanía shop with an extensive selection of choice crafts and art works from Oaxaca and elsewhere in Mexico. The large front room is devoted to artesanía. The back rooms serve as gallery space for paintings and graphics by local artists, as well as the exceptionally fine wall hangings produced by her husband, Teotitlán artist Arnulfo Mendoza. Although prices tend to be high, the selection is impressive and the pieces often unique. The shop carries many works by artists featured in the 1999 blockbuster show and accompanying book Great Masters of Mexican Folk Art. The friendly and knowledgeable young women who tend the store speak English.

Que Tenga Buena Mano  (#13)
Constitución 108, Centro
Artesanía shops are a dime a dozen in Oaxaca, most just clones of each other. However this hole-in-a-wall, no décor place with an odd name ("Having a Knack for...") is clearly different and offers an interesting and eclectic mix of folk art items, old and new textiles, traditional toys and reproduction silver jewelry. There is a lot crammed into a very small space here, so look carefully. The owner, Francisco Jesus Hernandez, has long worked in the artesanía field and is knowledgeable and helpful. (He can also repair jewelry.) This is a shop well worth seeking out for traditional popular art.
